They both write in such a different way and their stories are completely different. Tolkien is the story of one hobbit with his crew and everything is about the details in a wonderful universe. Martin is about each character evolving with their own objectives and a great menace. It's like comparing, idk, Avatar : the last air bender and fight club. It's two completely different kinds of art but they both appear on TV.

Martin's and Tolkien's books are two different genres. Tolkien wrote a crossover between mythical heroic epic and an early 20th century novel. Of course it would be more black-and-white. Martin wrote an almost naturalistic account of a gritty medievalesque world from multiple POVs.

ASOIAF is way better than LoRT (if we are gonna compare top books) LOTR is a pretty linear story that you know how it's gonna end from the first page with straight foward good guys and bad guys... It's like i said was an awesome book as a kid but as an adult... not so much... and please don't compare GOT with ASOIAF
